How do humanistic and existential personality theories differ? Which has had the greatest effect on studying personality? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The primary difference between humanistic and existential theories are that humanism assumes people are innately good, whereas existentialism assumes people are neither good nor bad as human nature has no inherent quality. Humanistic theories state that human possess positive capabilities and can live fully actualised lives when they are valued and supported by their environment. On the other hand, existential theories find a great deal of value in life and the freedom of choice that arises from life having no absolute meaning.

Among the two theories, humanistic theories have had a greater effect on studying personality. This is because it conceives human beings as already possessing positive qualities and striving for actualisation.
