Describe one method for detecting extrasolar planets. Give the name of the method, and explain how it works. Use online resources to report on one planet discovered using this method.

Answer #2

The planets are rotating around a star but the fact is the star also rotates due to the influence of the planets. The star rotates due the gravitational pull of the large planet which is rotating around the star. The gravitational pull of the large planet causes rotation of star due to this advantage astronomers were discovered hundreds of exoplanets using the large planet. Astronomers discovered the velocity of the star with respect to the large planet whether it is moving towards or away. The velocities low as one meter per second because of the Doppler Effect. The effect produces slightly higher frequencies towards and lowers moving away.

By using this method we can detect small and less distance planets from the star. The Earth-sized like planets and longer planets are difficult to determine.

One method to find extrasolar planets is by observing the Doppler shift arising from the reflex motion of the central star. Is this technique best able to find planets that are close or far away from the star? Planets that are massive or low mass? Planets that have a large or small radius? Why? Explain your reasoning for each.

An extrasolar planet in orbit around a Sun-like star is discovered using the Doppler wobble method. Based on the shape of the radial velocity curve, the orbit is circular. The data are as follows. Maximum velocity of the star: 6.3 meters / second Orbital period: 541 days What is the mass of the extrasolar planet? Give your answer in units of Jupiter masses.
