Describe what radar structures can be used for the detection of ships 200 km, 2000 km away on the sea surface and the detection of underwater targets, briefly explain them for reasons.
No the radar can not be used for underwater navigation upto such large distance .
This is because radar uses radio waves in the microwave frequency range(1cm approx ) . This wavelength range is used because it is easier to direct the waves with small antennas in narrow beams. Unfortunately, Microwaves are strongly absorbed by sea water within feet of their transmission. This is because radar is unusable in underwater.
Also radar takes a harder time penetrating large volumes of water. For so large distances the radar would have to be EXTREMELY powerful to reach that far in water, while sound wave can make it easily .so use of sonar is preferred over radar.
