Comet have typical lifetime is equal to 1/2 million years. It this period it is dynamical and after it it becomes dead. When comet travel through space they leaves a large amount of debris behind them which is loss of mass. In such a way they cann't sustained for long time. Comets move under the gravity of planet, hence they can collide with planet and becomes dead. Some of comets are injected to Sun.
