A circuit contains a light bulb and a capacitor (RC circuit) in series connected to an AC power supply. How should you choose the AC frequency such that the light glow the brightest? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

For higher frequencies the reactance of the capacitance is small so the current is large. Voltage drop across the bulb increases and hence power dissipated by the bulb will be more. As a result it will be more brighter.

A typical dimmer circuit, designed based on an SCR, is connected to a 100 W bulb. Typically, a potentiometer is used to adjust the light intensity or to adjust the transfer output power to the bulb. Assume that the AC power supply voltage is equal to 160 V and 60 Hz and the transferred power to the bulb is equal to 100/4 W ( a quarter of the bulb rated power). Find the RMS voltage drop across the bulb.
