Which of the following is probably NOT a reason that an experiment to search for neutrinos was conducted near a nuclear reactor?

A. Since the neutrino interacts so weakly, one needs a source of many neutrinos to increase the chances that one will interact in a detector.

B. Because nuclear interactions are taking place in the reactor, it is likely that beta decay will occur and neutrinos will be produced.

C. It is easy to separate out the neutrino from all the other radiation produced by a nuclear reactor.

D. It is much more expensive and complicated to do an experiment in the vicinity of a nuclear weapon explosion.

Answer #1

Option C is not valid reason.

Neutrino can not be easily seprated from other radiation. Neutrino detected indirect way in nuclear reactor as following :

antineutrinos created in a nuclear reactor by beta decay reacted with protons to produce neutrons and positrons. The neutron can be detected by its capture on an appropriate nucleus, releasing a gamma ray. The coincidence of both events – positron annihilation and neutron capture – gives a unique signature of an antineutrino interaction.
