Some clothes dryers have a “more dry” setting on which the dryer will run until the clothes are fully dry (i.e. for a variable, not a fixed, amount of time). Explain the role of the sensor, comparator and actuator in such a system. (Be sure to explain which is which!)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

SENSOR:

sensor is a electronic device which senses or measures any physical quantity.

In case a dryer the physical quantity is wetness of the clothes. It senses tha amount of humidity present in the wet cloths constantly and senta those signals to the COMPARATOR.

COMPARATOR:

comparator is an electronic device which compares two electrnic signals.

In case of a cloth dryer. the comparator receives signals for the sensor and compares the signals with the inbuilt standard signals of dryness .after comparison it sends the signals to actuator whether to stop the machine or to modify the machine.

If the dryness levels match ,then the comparator sends the signal to actuator to stop the machine

ACTUATOR:

actuator controls the movement ofa mechanism in a machine.

In this case if the signal recieved from the comparator is taken and it stops the mechanism of drying.

SOME DRAWBACK OF BLACK-SCHOLES Briefly discuss here some difficulties associated with the Black Scholes formula, which is widely used to calculate the price of an option. For example, consider a European call option for a stock. This is the right to buy a specific number of shares of a specific stock on a specific date in the future, at a specific price (the exercise price, also called the strike price). If all these quantities are fixed, the question becomes: what...

You’re doing some stress-testing on various models of glass jars to determine the height from which they can be dropped and still not break. The setup for this experiment, on a particular type of jar, is as follows. You have a ladder with n rungs, and you want to find the highest rung from which you can drop a copy of the jar and not have it break. We call this the highest safe rung. It might be natural to...

We constantly seem to be pricing ourselves out of some markets and not charging enough in others. Our pricing policy is pretty simple: we mark up our full manufacturing cost by 50%. That means a computer that costs us $2,000 to manufacture will sell for $3,000. Until now I thought this was a workable approach, but now I’m not so sure. Steve Works, CEO, Cortland Manufacturing, Inc. (CMI) Steve’s Controller, Sally Nomer, had just told him that she believed the...

DONLEY BROTHERS The Donley Brothers Company had encountered the problem of latent defects in some of its purchased castings. Being latent, the defects did not show up until after machining had taken place at Donley Brothers. This group of failures greatly irritated the manufacturing boss, who declared that “repairing those darn castings is eating up all our profits.” When the defects were discovered, the rough casting had to be taken off the machine, the defect chipped out and repair-welded, and...
