You are about 8 m away from the elevator in a hospital carpark. As you are walking towards the elevator, the alarm in a car that is parked close to the elevator area sets off. Explain if there will be any change in the frequency of the sound of the alarm as you move closer to the affected car from your original position.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The original frequency of the alarm is unchanged. But the apparent frequency fo heard by the person, as he closes in on the car, is different from the original frequency f, where apparent frequency is given by

where, v = speed of sound and, u = speed of person

and from the equation we can see than the apparent frequency heard by the person is larger than the original frequency.

A 740-kg two-stage rocket is traveling at a speed of 6.40×10^3 m/s away from Earth when a predesigned explosion separates the rocket into two sections of equal mass that then move with a speed of 2.30×10^3 m/s relative to each other along the original line of motion. 1. Consider a speaker at some fixed position, emitting sound uniformly in all directions. You are standing at some distance d from this speaker, holding a sound-intensity measuring device. You then walk 25.0 m in a straight line towards the speaker. At this point you observe that the intensity of the sound has doubled (from the previous location). Determine the distance d. There are no echoes or reflections or interference. 2. You are standing equidistant from four identical jet engines...

You are standing at the midpoint between two speakers, a distance D away from each. The speakers are playing the exact same sound of frequency 170 Hz in phase with each other. You begin by hearing nothing, but the sound gets louder. Then it gets...

In order to get going fast, eagles will use a technique called stooping, in which they dive nearly straight down and tuck in their wings to reduce their surface area. While stooping, a 6-kg golden eagle can reach speeds of up to 53 m/s. While golden eagles are not very vocal, they sometimes make a weak, high-pitched sound. Suppose that while traveling at maximum speed, a golden eagle heads directly towards a pigeon while emitting a sound at 1.1 kHz....

While taking a break from studying, you want to get a glass of ice water. As you fill your glass with ice, one cube falls on the floor. You know that a [A] neuron (functional classification) carries an action potential to the [B] cortex of the brain to produce the perception of cold. To walk over...
