What properties do an electron and a proton share?

What properties do an electron and a proton share?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer :

Electrons and Protons are a subatomic particle with an Electron having negative charge and Protons have a positive charge.

The magnitude of charge on both Protons and Electrons are same. (It just differ in sign)

Here, The charge on these subatomic particles is called fundamental unit of charge : e = 1.6 x 10-19 C

  • Charge on protons is +e. Mass of protons is 1.6727×10−27 kg.
  • Charge on electrons is -e. Mass of electrons is 9.1×10−31 kg.

Protons are bound together in an atom's nucleus as a result of the strong nuclear force and Electrons are free to move around the Nucleus.

Hydrogen: For an electron in the lowest energy it can orbit around proton, they have a separation of 5.3 *10-11 m. If you have a 4.5*10-19J photon (bit of light) hit the electron, it will transfer all of its energy to the proton electron interaction and the electron will start orbiting at a larger radius. Assuming all the energy went into the potential energy, what is the new distance between the electron and proton.
