Name the properties that are affected by the strength of atomic bonds and explain their relationship (increases or decreases).

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Melting Temperature : The melting temperature increases when the ionic distance decreases within the lattice.

Hardness: Hardness increases with decreasing ionic distance when the ionic charges are assumed constant & it increases for increasing valency, despite increasing ionic distance.

Elastic modulus: Compounds having stronger atomic bonds possess higher elastic modulus than weak bonded compounds.

Tensile strength: Compounds having stronger atomic bonds possess higher tensile strength than weak bonded compounds.

Thermal expansion:  Thermal expansion decreases when the ionic distance increases within the lattice.
