Arrange the following elements in order of increasing atomic size, and explain how you know the order: Rb, S, Si, Ge, F. Do not simply restate the trends but actually explain why there is an increase in sized based on properties of the atom.
F < S < Si < Ge < Rb
Due to general trend i.e atomic size decreases across a period and increases down a group.
F is first member of 17 th group (last group) so it has smaller size.
S is the second member of 16 th group. So it has next more size after F.
Si is second member go 14th group. So, it has more size than S.
Ge is below the Si in same group. So, it has more size than Si.
Rb belongs 1st group and fourth member. I general frist group members have higher size in each group.
