Analyze how power is both gained and lost in organizations. Consider your own organization or one you are familiar with. Identify how power is used. Discuss how effective a leader is based on his or her use of power. Appropriately cite the sources you use to support your comments.

• Power is usually gained in organizations when an employee is promoted, the employee rises in hierarchy level, the authority increases and also the span of control increases. The employee gets more power and decision making abilities by going up in the hierarchy.
• The power is lost when the performance is not up-to the level to promote the employee; he/she loses the team that is being given by the organization to him/her. The authority and span of control decreases which is an indication of loss of power.
• The organization that I am working with is Alibaba, the power is used to channelize things, pass orders, get the work done the way I want, certain decisions are taken by me and I am given a good span of control to handle the process.
• An effective leader should lead by example; he/she should not misuse the power by not considering the view point of employees and just passing orders to get the work done as per his/her wishes. The feedback should also be taken from the employee so that a leader can improve the process and collective leadership should be adopted to ensure that power is not misused.
