Develop training programs for the following WHS topics:
a. Electrical safety
Identify the following for above topic:
· The target group/s,
· An outline of why the training is needed,
· Level of training – who is it aimed at? (i.e. new employees, managers, etc.),
· Learning needs/requirements of the target group/s,
· Program content (list topics to be covered in dot point format) NB you can select one aspect of a topic i.e. for hazardous substances you might identify one group of substances. Don’t try and cover too much in your outline,
· Delivery mode and rationale for why you’ve selected it (i.e. workshops, coaching on the job etc.),
· Estimate time (i.e. is this a whole day workshop or 3 hours online etc.),
· What legislation, codes of practice, rules, regulations, policies, procedures etc. are relevant?
· Where you will source the information required to develop the program (make a list)?
· What aids will be used (i.e. flowcharts, videos etc.)?
· Whether it will be delivered internally or externally and rationale for this choice,
· An estimate of the cost of running the program (include the direct delivery costs as well as an estimate of time off the job for participants). You may need to do some research with RTO’s and other external providers to get cost estimates,
· How you will evaluate its success
What will be the target groups-
1. The security people
2. The vendors inside the organization campus
3. Employees - all levels
4. Lift operators
Why is the training needed-
1. To prevent any hazards due to electrical faults
2. To prevent damages to employees from normal electrical shocks
3. To prevent electric fires inside the organization campus
4. Reduce the cost on medical aids/insurances that are given due to accidents occuring due to electricity
5. Reduce operational time lost due to electrical failures
Level of training-
Level of training should be-
1. High Class- for lift operators, security people, and vendors inside the campus, as they are the people who interact most with electrical equipment
2. Middle level - For newly joined employees
3. Low level - For management level employees and employees working for over 5 years in the company.
Learning needs-
1. What can be the possible electrical hazards
2. What can be the type of damages in the electrical equipment that may prove harmful or result in a bigger damage
3. How to handle electronic equipment present in the company
4. What to do if an electric fire breaks-out
5. How to report if you see a probable damage regarding the electrical equipment
6. How to self-repair electrical equipment to whatever extent possible in case of an emergency
Program content-
The above mentioned 6 points can be used as program content
Delivery mode-
Use real time workshops only for training because-
1. What is seen in real life is always better learnt
2. No cost to be spent on IT infrastructure for online video based training
3. On the job training can make employees lose their focus on work, and at the same time not able to concentrate on the training as well, hence that would be a waste of resources
4. The real time workshop training sessions will also act as a source of refreshment for the employees
Estimated Time-
One cannot tell the estimated time directly, there are several factors that would be affecting it-
1. Number of employees - if too many, there have to be several batches run for it
2. The topics that have to be covered- the important ones have to be given enough time so that the employees retain them
3. The availability of the venue for the time being
4. Cost on resources- venue, training teams, equipment etc.
5. Office work should also not be affected, so the time has to be decided accordingly
Legislation, rules, policies etc?
There are laws on using several equipment, rules and regulations which tell how to use equipment, policies which tell what equipment should be used till what time etc.
Contact the electricity department of your city for these and take the right guidance for preparing this program
Source of info-
Rule Book of safety by the electricity board
Type of equipment and how to handle them - city electricity department
Why your employees need electricity training - internet
How to devise a corporate electricity training program - internet and case studies
Aids-
1. Posters
2. Real equipment and hazard scenarios
3. Videos
4. Hand-outs
5. E-Mails
Deliver it internally - You have to train the employees for an electricity hazard that occurs inside your campus, hence it would be best to deliver the training inside the campus, so that the employees get a feel of real time scenarios that may occur, and better ready to tackle situations
Cost of running- The cost of running can only be decided according to locally available rates of several equipment, hence it would be best to yourself do some research on the list of items (mentioned above) required for the training.
Success evaluation-
Evaluate success by-
Make a chart for each month on number of -
1. Electrical failures reported
2. Operational down time due to electric faults
3. Any employee receiving damage due to faulty handling of equipment
4. Reported damages regarding electrical equipment
Each month, see the number, and if the numbers have improved and progressed over the time period, it means that the training sessions have done well
