answer.....
A multinational company, while setting up one of its industrial
project in a remote area, in foreign country, took a decision to
buy one ambulance, fully equipped with some monitoring equipment
for vital health parameters, and some emergency services required
during the transportation of the patients to the nearby
hospital.
The company had its ethical and environment protection policies and
had been contributing to the society in some other ways as per the
budgets sanctioned for these causes.
When they (The Company) did the exercise to assess the safety and
health maintenance environment, in the area where the project was
coming up, it was discovered that in the case of an accident at
site, needing ambulance services to transport the injured to the
nearby hospital, the reliable ambulance services round the clock
were not available.
The nearby hospital was 20 kms away and in the night time the
driver may not be available.
While assessing this case, the issue was also raised that all our
labor, some with their families are living in the nearby village,
the similar emergency service is not available for them and the
village people also.
A decision was taken that the company shall buy and maintain an
ambulance fully equipped at the site, at their own expenses and it
services are available for the village also.
It was also decided that the ambulance will be donated to the
village, once the project is over and we demobilize from the site,
completely.
This decision was guided by the principles of Relativism (Social
norms and values in cultural context), Utilitarianism (Utility in
our business as well as for the society at large), Universalism
(Interest of the people was in the mind) and Justice (Principles of
fairness and justice were also involved).
