SYSTEM ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT FIFTH EDITION
Benjamin S. Blanchard
What is the purpose of a WBS?
WBS is the abbreviation of Work-Based Structure. The main purpose of WBS is to break down complicated tasks into a collection of tasks. This is very useful in project management, as the project manager can oversee each task effectively rather than supervision on complex activities.
What is the difference between a WBS, a SWBS, and a CWBS?
Contract WBS(CWBS) and Subcontract WBS(SWBS) are types of WBS. A WBS is usually detailed and developed during a proposal for a contract. After the contract has been confirmed, the project manager extends the WBS into CWBS during its initial planning phases. CWBS provides scope of work and work assignments to the different functional organizations to perform the duties as per the contract. It is pertinent to note that only one CWBS exists for a contract. A CWBS provides the Statement of Work (SOW) in contracts.
Subcontract WBS (SWBS) is an extension of the CWBS by the prime contractor. SWBS is completed by the subcontractor and it is beneath one of the CWBS project elements.
The synergy of the three types of WBS is essential for the success of a project.
How do work packages relate to the WBS?
A work package is the lowest level or component or the smallest unit of work in a WBS. It is also known as the terminal element of a WBS because the final deliverable is further decomposed into smaller components.
