What should be done if a team encounters such scenario: the generalist has a different (sometimes even an opposite) opinion after asking a specialist to explain what he or she didn't understand. The generalist understands some of the work the specialist is doing, but not 100%. Do you think the team should go with what specialist thinks because of his or her expertise? I feel like the PM (the generalist) is the decision maker, but not always. Do you have any idea?
Specialists and generalists are different in their approaches. Specialist is a person who is expert in a particular domain, he or she would have in depth knowledge of everything about that field but may not have knowledge about the other aspects of some different field whereas generalist is a person who would have some idea about every process or affected area but he or she might not be an expert in one field.
PM is not always a decision maker, if the thing that is being discussed is one specific and has no impact on other items then specialist word can bought and we should go with what the specialist is saying because he is an expert in that whereas if there are many processes that are getting affected and specialist has not idea about those processes then we should go by what the generalist is saying.
