Discuss the differences between utilization and efficiency as measures of system performance. Which (if any) is the most useful measure for an operations manager? Why?

Efficiency and utilization are both very key measurements that can actually help the management of a business or an organization obtain a solid understanding and reality of how they are performing.

-Efficiency can well be defined as the comparison of what is actually being produced or the level of performance with what can actually be maximally achieved with the same consumption of resources such as money, labor, time etc. Efficiency is therefore a key factor in determining productivity of a business. Efficiency of any given system measures the ratio of the performance against the inputs that are utilized by the system.

-Utilization on the other hand is defined as the proportion of the available time (usually expressed as a percentage) that a piece of equipment or a system is operating.

Utilization is calculated as = (Operating hours * 100) / Available hours.

-Therefore, the main difference between efficiency and utilization is that the utilization rate directly impacts the efficiency measurement. The efficiency of a system or program in actual sense is ultimately the utilization of different areas within a system or a program. Any given operations manager would benefit a lot from measuring the efficiency as it would provide them with an overall picture of the entire performance of his/her program, process or system.
