Food Stamps

The food stamps is a program administered by the Department of Agriculture of the United States to ensure enough supply of nutritious food to underprivileged citizens of the nation. Poor and low-income people in American society are getting assistance in buying any non-prepared food under this scheme. It helps the disadvantaged sections in society to get access to food. The value of food stamps is determined on the basis of federal nutrition recommendations. The food stamps shall be redeemed at a retail shop for purchasing essential food. The state governments are regulating and administering the food stamp programs in each state. The major objective of food stamps is to support people who struggle to purchase essential healthy food. It also aims at eliminating malnourishment in society. Further, it tries to ensure the accessibility of a healthy diet for all citizens in the United States. It is also used as a tool to distribute money in the economy and thereby ensuring the welfare of people. It supports an unemployed person until he or she becomes self-sufficient. It helps a lot in improving public health in the USA.

The major limitation of the food stamp program is that in each state there is a separate law for administering this program. Along with that the alien residents and immigrants are not getting the benefits under the food stamps program in the absence of proper documentation. There is also an argument that the food stamps program drains the federal budget. Further, there is a criticism that some recipients of food stamps purchasing unhealthy food items contain a high amount of sugar and fat including packaged food. Even though this scheme is beneficial for a bigger section of society, some 38 million citizens befitted from the program in the year 2019. The government is spending a handsome amount on the food stamps program from its inception onwards. The government spent 60.35 billion dollars on this program in 2019 alone. But we could see a decline in government spending on this program from the year 2014 onwards.
