I need your opinion or what did u learn from Richard Wright's "The Man Who Was Almost A Man"
thank you
The story is about a seventeen-year-old boy, Dave who is desperate to prove his manhood due to the circumstances he is going through. He was being teased, bullied and disrespected by the white people around him and thus concludes that the only way to make the things right is by proving himself to be a man for which he decides to possess a gun. The story is about how his decision went wrong in his favour and the troubles he had to face in this move towards adulthood. Though the story is around Dave coming of age it gives many messages about society.
It tells about the different concepts of parenthood and how particular parenting ways can bring certain outcomes. It shows how lives can be controlled by wealth and class and everyone's role in society is defined in these two factors. It also highlights the culture of slavery of African- Americans followed in that period to minimise their potential. It also gives a message that how desperation for something can lead someone to wrong path and a desire in him can become his worst nightmare.
