Does media violence lead to aggression?
“Yes, media violence does lead to aggression"
So far so many studies and researches undoubtedly had proven that media violence leads to aggression. Before going to that we could just check what exactly media violence and aggression are.
Media violence is a term used to denote all forms of mass communication that depict the threat to use force, the act of using force, or the consequences of the use of force against animate beings (including news to cartoon characters to video games to cinemas). Aggression is a psychological term which denotes the feelings of anger or antipathy resulting in hostile or violent behaviour; readiness to attack or confront.
Canadian-American psychologist Albert Bandura was the first to prove that media violence can lead to aggression. He conducted a series of clinical experperiments in children known as Bobo Doll Experiments in the 1960s. In one of the experiments, Bandura and his team made children 3 groups. One group was shown a doll being hit by an adult person. Second group too was shown the doll being hit by an adult model, but it was shown on television. The third group was shown the doll, but no one hit the doll. In the second part of this experiment, all the children were the same kind of doll which was shown to them. The idea was to observe whether the children imitate the aggression towards the doll. The result indicated that the group which was shown the doll being hit on television showed more aggressive character towards the doll than the group directly watched the doll being hit.
In 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, two students of a US school in Columbine killed 13 people and wounded 23. Both students were avid players of violent video games. It was found that before the massacre, both of them played a specially modified version of the video game Doom. In a videotape released after the massacre by Harris himself mentioned his gun as “Arlene,” which is the name of the protagonist’s love interest in the Doom novels.
After we analyzed both sides of the arguments, we have found that there are plenty of studies and examples which proves media violence leads to aggression. There isn't any valid study or examples which could disprove this relation between media violence and aggression.
