If the patient complains of weakness in the left arm, where should we expect to see an abnormality on the EEG?
The crossing of neurons from one side to the opposite side is known as “decussation or crossing over.” The peripheral sensory fibers cross or decussate at the spinal cord or brain stem and reach opposite sides of the brain. So that, the sensations from the right side of the body reach the left side of the brain (left hemisphere) and the impulses from the left side of the body reach the right side of the brain (right hemisphere).
As the patient experiences weakness in the left arm, the abnormality will be present on the right side of the brain. So, in the EEG (electroencephalogram), the abnormality will be found in the right side.
