Describe the relation between goiter and Hypothyroidism?
Goiter is the condition when the thyroid gland gets enlarged or grows abnormally which results in the swelling of neck. The major cause of goiter is low/lack of iodised diet. Apart from low /lack of iodine diet, goiter can also be caused by the inflammation of gland, hypothyroidism (under production of thyroid hormes) or hyperthyroidism (overproduction of thyroid hormones)
In case of HYPOTHYROIDISM, the thyroid gland is not able to produce sufficient amount of thyroid hormones. As the hormone level is lowered in the body or is insufficient in amount, signal is sent to pituitary gland for increased production. As a result pituitary gland produces more TSH(Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) which leads to an enlargement of thyroid gland causing goiter.
