Over the counter drugs (OTC drugs) are the drugs that need no prescription and can be obtained directly from pharmacy.
ADVANTAGES

  • Relief from a disease can be achieved fast.
  • Need not meet a physician, time can be saved and money too.
  • With less patients, the physician may get more time to spend with patients.
  • It might be useful when the health care system is poor working.
  • It gives a person confidence over taking care of health and also well being.

DISADVANTAGES

  • The person might get a wrong drug by confusing the symptoms.
  • He may not be able to obtain suitable dose.
  • Continuous usage may lead to addiction
  • Delays patient meeting with physician till the symptoms got worse
  • The OTC drugs might be abused
  • Drug interactions may occur (if the person is already using some other medicine)
