The role of a medical specialist today compared to the role of a medical specialist in the past has changed drastically but has remained the same basically. Drastic evolution in the field of medicine with technological advancements, the technologies used and specialists with high-end training in these modern technologies is a major difference in medical specialists then and now. These technologies have resulted in an entirely new scenario unheard of in the past. Several application softwares are there to help today's specialists in scheduling, consultation, and treatment, which were unheard of in the past and specialists had to waste their time in all these processes of management of care. When it comes to decision-making, today's specialists are free to make more independent choices, which was not there in the past. Even though there are so many dissimilarities between today's specialists and the specialists of the past, the basic similarities, the roles, etc are the same. Specialists in the past, as well as those of today, do the same job as far as any specialty is concerned. They go deeper into a particular specialty and deals with the intricate details of diseases and treatment of that particular specialty. For example, only a cardiologist can be the final word for a cardiology condition.

A patient navigator is a healthcare professional who acts as a patient guide and helps the patient to navigate through the entire process in a hospital. They are also called insurance navigators as they assist the patient in choosing and enrolling in healthcare benefit plans. The medical assistant as a patient navigator helps the clinic's quality improvement process. They identify and assist patients requiring assisting services and helps them with their needs. They improve healthcare accessibility and helps in increased number of positive outcomes.
