Ans) Catheter insertion:
- Gather all articles for Catheter insertion.
- Perform hand hygiene.
- Put on sterile gloves.
- Grasp the sterile catheter 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) from the tip and keep it from touching anything.
- Ask the patient to take a deep breath and slowly exhale while you insert the catheter tip. Advance it 2 to 3 inches until urine flow starts. Advance it another 1 to 2 inches to make sure it's in the bladder
Indwelling catheter insertion:
- Perform hand hygiene.
- Place the patient in supine position.
- If soiling evident, clean genital area with soap and water
first.
- Perform hand hygiene.
- Open catheter pack (aseptic field) and prepare equipment needed
using aseptic technique.
- Pour sterile saline onto tray.
- Perform aseptic hand wash and don sterile gloves.
- Grasp the catheter without touching the tip
- Xylocaine jelly for lubricating the tip of catheter.
- Slowly insert the catheter till the urine comes out.
- Inflate the catheter with distill water to fix the catheter in position.
- Keep the drainage bag below the level of your bladder and off the floor at all times.
- Keep the catheter secured to your thigh to prevent it from moving.
- Don't lie on the catheter or block the flow of urine in the tubing.
- Shower daily to keep the catheter clean.
Condom Catheter insertion:
- Clip hair from perineal are.Do not shave this area.
- Grasp penes along shaft, hold condom catheter at tip of penes and smoothly roll condom onto penes, allow 1-2 inches between tip of penes and condom catheter to keep the condom catheter from irritating the tip of the penes.
- Attach urine bag & secure the catheter in position.
