what is the rationale in making a vomiting infant NPO? they are receiving bolus as well. But they are NPO from pedialyte if vomiting. Why? Thank you
Answer :-
Vomiting in infants even NPO due to Infants reflux , some babies have infants reflux acid reflux and GERD happens as like adults. This can leads to baby vomiting in the 1st year of life .
Vomiting from acid reflux happens when the muscles at the top of the stomach are too relaxed. This triggers baby vomiting shortly after feeding.
The bolus may leads to overfeeding are too fast feeding which leads to back the bolus .
No solid or liquids for 30 to 60 minutes after vomiting
Offer oral rehydration solution ( Pedialyte) or other clear fluid
Note :- Avoid plain water
Give small amount one tsp in few minutes and increase slowly.
After 4 hrs if no vomiting return to normal formula.
But excessive Pedialyte electrolytes leads to more sodium refferd as hyoernatermia can leads to vomiting also excessive hyperkalemia impact on kidney and cause heart arrhythmia.
Note:- If child NPO from Pedialyte then infusion ORS via a NG tube it may be temporarily used to achieve rehydration.
Intravenous Fluid Administration 20-30 ml/kg isotonic sodium chloride 0.9%solution over 1 to 2 hours may also be used until rehydration is tolerated.
Note :- natural source or alternative of Pedialyte is Coconut which rich in all electrolytes.
