1) Assess the history and demographic data of the patient
Gathering informations regarding the recent or remote travel to endemic is critical. Determine patients immune status, allergies, age, pregnancy status and other medical conditions.
2) Maintaining the body temperature of the patient
It can be achieved by maintaining a warm environment by warm water compress on both axilla and forehead ( but not more than 15 minutes)
Warm environment can be maintained by using warm blankets. ( Patient may sweat excessively)
Antipyretic drugs can be administered as ordered.
Avoid exposing patient to wet clothes and linens.
3) Increase fluid volume
Loss of fluids are expected during sweating. Encourage increased oral fluid intake and adminster parentral fluids as ordered.
4) Improving tissue perfusion
In severe conditions patient may need supplemental oxygen. A well ventilated room should be maintained; head of bed at 30 degree; lession activities that require moderate to high exerction.
5) Educating the patient and family
Focussing on patients concern discuss the disease process and therapy given. Also teach the importance of adhering to the therapy. Educate them on medications and its purposes, dosage, frequency and its adverse effects.
