A typical blood gas of a patient with a pulmonary embolus would be:

            a) PaO2 75, CO2 45

            b) PaO2 50, CO2 29

            c) PaO2 68, CO2 45

            d) PaO2 80, CO2 32

Answer #1

In pulmonary embolism the patient has low pO2 (hypoxemia) as well as low pCo2(hypocapnea).

The normal range of pO2 is 75 to 100 mm of Hg

and the normal range of pCO2 is 35 to 45 mm of Hg.

As there is hypoxemia and hypocapnea thus the value of PO2 should be less than or equal to 50 mm Hg an the level of pCO2 should be less than 30 mm of Hg.

Hence the option B is the correct answer.

All the other options has value greater than the correct value in either of pO2 or pCO2.

1. Bill McDonald, 65 years of age, is a male patient diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He is going to be discharged with home oxygen at 2 L/min per nasal cannula. According to Medicare guidelines, the patient falls into the group 1 patient category, the patient’s O2 saturation on room air was less than 88% and his PaO2 was less than 55 mm Hg, which was obtained from an arterial blood gas (ABG) at room air. The physician...

1) Pulmonary arterioles respond to different factors than systemic arterioles because in the lungs, the blood supply is receiving oxygen and delivering carbon dioxide, while in the systemic circulation, it is delivering oxygen, and receiving carbon dioxide. In the pulmonary circuit, arterioles will dilate in well-ventilated areas of the lungs to increase the rate of exchange between capillaries and well-ventilated alveoli. However, in poorly ventilated areas of the lungs, arterioles will constrict in order to re-route blood to well-ventilated areas....
