Industrial microbiology is the use of microbes in the processes in industry.

Major applications of microbiology in Industries:

  • Production of antibiotics used in healthcare - Penicillin produced from Penicillium chrysogenum is used to treat a wide variety of infections
  • Production of beverages (beer, wine etc) - Yeast is used in the fermentation process of production of beverages like wine
  • Production of organic acids - Certain organic acids are commercially produced from microbes Eg. Aspergillus niger - Citric acid, Acetobacter acute - acetic acid
  • Production of enzymes such as protease, lipase etc
  • Production of biofuels like ethanol, acetone etc
  • Spirulina is a single cell protein and serves as an alternative source of energy
