If an individual has some signs and symptoms of cough ,immediately without any thinking they stand up in front of a pharmacy or medical shop to get a cough suppressant and get relieved from it at the earliest. The composition of these cough drugs are nothing but the DXM (Dextromethorphan) .This drug is available as an over the counter medication without any prescription.This is metabolised in liver and excreted via renal system with just 11% bioavailability .Though this drug is affordable and accessible it is not a thing to be encouraged . All medicine has its own side effects and DXM is not an exceptional .It has a morphinan effect which can make the individual who consumed to be drowsy or sedate them. As it is a form of psychoactive drug it can make the person to be addicted to it. Psychosis can occur if consumed more, it can affect the nervous system. In simple the reason to make this drug as a prescription drug are it high chance of drug dependence, psychosis and sedative effects make them at risk for accident or injury. Hence this medication should not be provided as OTC drug but dispatched only with doctor's prescription.
