Disability Care worker

Disability Care worker or Disability support workers are people who supports, supervise and provide care and assistance to the people with disabilities in home , hospitals, clinics and residential home. The major duties of the Disability care workers are to assist aged or disabled person in their Activities of Daily Living , mobility, personal hygiene and grooming, house works, co- ordination of social events and shopping tasks.

Empowering the client:

Disability support worker have to empower the Disabled person in achievements , goals, aspiration, choices, client decisions and advocacy.

Empower the Disabled person by making them feel as a valued member of the community through the ways:

* use appropriate languages

* Participate in appropriate activities

* respect and treat each person as an individual

* Offer assistance and support to achieve or accomplish their tasks.

* Positive attitude towards to the Disabled person

Empower the person by being a role model in assisting them for the achievements, aspirations and goals.

Example: Chris is a Disability support worker, who care fo Rob. Rob have to do regular physical exercise for controlling the body weight. Rob and Chris goes to local gim  together for three days in a week. Both are in gym clothing , each one carry their own water and towel. Chris actions supported Rob to attend gym regularly to achieve his weight loss goals. Role modelling also can assist in achievement and aspirations.

Empower the Disabled person by acting as an Advocate for their rights. Disability support worker has to have an understanding about the Acts that protect Disabled person from discrimination and abuse.

Empower the client by supporting his Decision making capacity. Disability support worker won't take Decisions on behalf of Disabled person, instead support them for Decision making. Either they will make or their guardian will make the Decision on behalf of them . Disability support worker should ensure that the Disabled person , understand and informed about the decision.  

Example: Sandy , a Disability support worker cares for Jen , mild mentally retarded person, who express his wish for joining to skating. Sandy explains him the fall risks, safety issues and the strict use of Helmets, skating shoes , elbow and knee pads. As Jen hates use of Helmet , he decides not to join for skating.
