Difference in respect for the patient versus respect for colleagues (those that you work with).

Respect for the patient

Respect and dignity are part of the ethical foundation of nursing. It’s reflected in the first provision of the code of ethics, and it’s essential for us to fulfill our ethical obligations. It’s not optional, not something to be dispensed with if stressed or tired or overstretched.” The nurse respects individual’s right to privacy, maintains confidentiality, and shares information judiciously-

Here are some ways to ensure respectful care of patients:

1. Treat every patient equally: One of the fundamental tenets of nursing is respect for all people. Respectful treatment honors the patients and their family and all of their unique characteristics.

2. Remember basic courtesies. The behaviors you learned in nursing school, such as knocking before entering a patient room still apply in reality as respect to patient.

3. Understand the patient perspective.

Remember that patients are at their sickest and most vulnerable, and families are often at their most concerned and stressed so respect the patient perspective.

4. Communicate with respect.

Talk to the patient even if the patient is unconscious, tell the patient what you are doing and why it shows respect to patient.

Respect for colleagues

Respect is a key requirement for a healthy work environment. It promotes teamwork and increases productivity and efficiencies in the workplace. It lets employees know they are valued for their abilities, qualities and achievements, and that their role is important to their company's success.

Being respected and valued promotes a positive work culture where employees are loyal, fulfilled, and motivated to perform at their best for their company. Those who are not respectful to others are unprofessional and a threat to the health of their company.

Always treat colleagues the way you want to be treated—with respect. Recognize that, like you, your colleagues, reports, and superiors have rights, opinions, wishes, experience, and competence. Respect in the workplace breeds a healthy work environment. A professional, respectful work culture encourages productivity and growth.

Example for demonstrating respect to your colleagues in the workplace include:

  • Treat people with courtesy, politeness, and kindness.
  • Encourage colleagues to express opinions and ideas.
  • Listen to what others have to say before expressing your viewpoint. Never speak over or interrupt another person.
  • Never insult, use name-calling, disparage, or belittle people or their ideas.
  • Be aware of your body language, the tone of voice, and expression in all of your interactions at work. People hear what you're really saying in addition to listening to your words.
  • Improve your ability to interact with colleague, this will help you to relate with empathy and better understand those with whom you work.
