For those of you with current or previous work experience, how is (was) productivity measured in your organization.  Discuss the concepts of total production, average production and marginal production.  Relate production to cost and discuss how the ideas of total cost, average cost and marginal cost are used in decision making.

Answer #1

Productivity in my previous organization was measured as number of cases closed per hour. I was into content support and our productivity was calculated using the cases we worked upon. And also how many cases we work upon each additional hour.

Total production refers to total output produced

Average production refers to output produced per hour

Marginal production refers to additional output produced when one more hour is worked.

Productivity efficiency is best measured when marginal production is compared to marginal cost of employee.

It is the additional cost incurred of hiring an employee per hour.

The best way to check for profit maximization is by equating marginal cost to marginal revenue brought in by selling the additional output created.

DISCUSSION- PRODUCTION THEORY First, the idea that firms (and individuals) should make decisions on how they optimize "on the margin" (where MC=MR). Often people get confused and think about making decisions based on the average (such as average total cost). Average total cost includes FIXED costs, which are sunk and should not influence future decisions. Second, the idea of diminishing marginal returns. That's the idea that each additional unit provides less benefit than the previous unit consumed. Use these concepts...

1.   In previous problem, the given Cobb-Douglas production function was Q = 6 L½ K½ and the cost function was given as:      C = 3L + 12K. For $384 of total cost, the optimum labor usage was determined to be 64, and capital of 16. a.    If the cost function now changes to C = 3L + 18K, it implies that the total cost will become $480. Compute the new level of total cost for Q = 192. Can...
