Hypothalamus is a very important gland in the endocrine system. It plays a crucial role in maintaing different functions of the body and maintain the homeostasis of the body by controlling the secretion of certain hormones from pitutary gland. It helps in maintaining optimal body temperature, physiological cycles, appetite, sexual and emotional response. Pituitary gland and thyroid gland are the other two imortant glands in the endocrine system.

The hormones that are secreted by hypothalamus are dopamine, oxytocin, somatostatin, corticotrophin-releasing hormone, growth hormone-releasing hormone,  gonadotrophin-releasing hormone and thyrotrophin-releasing hormone
