The parents of a 16-year-old boy accompanied him to the hospital for admission for the insertion of a totally implantable insulin infusion pump and injection of insulin. The patient has had type 1 diabetes mellitus since the age of 11 years. The insertion of the pump into the subcutaneous tissue of his abdomen was successful. On numerous occasions during the admission, the patient’s diabetes had been uncontrolled with various types and dosages of insulin that were administered through the pump.
