The ancient Greeks bequeathed a lot of the Roman empire, including their panteon of gods and mythological stories.In architecture,the Greek orders were taken on by the Romans as the basis for their temples and state building.Colums , pediments and cornice intrinsic to the classical order were employed all over the Roman empire.
The Romans did not invent but did master both the arch and vault, bringing a new dimension to their building that the Greek did not have .
Archs can carry much more weight than straight beams , allowing long distance to be spanned without supportincolumns.The romans realised that arches didn't have to be full semi- circles, allowing them to build their long higher spans,best sceen in some of their spectacular aqueducts.
Vaultstake the arches strength and apply them in three dimensions. Vaulted roofs were a spectacular innovation.The widest vaulted Roman roof was the 100 foot wide roof over the throne room in Diocletian's palace.
