Answer #1

Estate tax is a tax levied on an heir's inherited portion of an estate. Estate tax is levied on what you pass on to your heirs after your death. These items can include cash, retirement accounts, property.
The value of the estate must be over a certain amount for it to be eligible for estate tax and the amount is determined by its fair market value. Estates passed over to spouses and certain qualified charities are exempt from taxes, everyone else is subject to estate taxes.

The person receiving the inheritance is responsible for payment of the estate taxes.
