Disciplinary perspectives
In simple terms, each discipline is different and has different
perspectives or views of reality. One perspective can't encompass
all about discipline. All the views from different places or people
need to be analyzed before an overall perspective can be agreed
upon. It is also called a lens through which we can view the world
or the reality we live in.
example, take biologists as a discipline, they would only be
focusing on understanding the world of biology and not other
realities such as political science related to any problems.
One discipline also can't comprehensively explain all about its
subject and thus there is a term called interdisciplinary that
links one discipline with the other.
Misconceptions of Disciplinary perspectives
- Narrow focus: Perspective is just one of the elements of
discipline. One won't be able to completely understand the
discipline if it just looked from the different views of reality.
Phenomena which resulted in discipline, assumptions present in it,
and more such elements need to be studied to fully comprehend the
overall picture.
- perspective can be substituted with purview: Purview means to
limit the scope of authority which is different from the definition
of the perspective. Through perspective, we are able to interpret
the true relationship and importance of the discipline subject with
other things.
- perspective similar to insight: insights of the discipline is
reflected in their perspectives. Drawing insights comes under the
process of interdisciplinary when the more comprehensive study of
problems is done. Insights are therefore different from the
perspectives Insight is more of a perception and it comes after the
perspectives have been drawn.
- The perspective of disciplines integrated into a research
process to solve a problem: As explained above, to solve a problem
and have a deeper understanding of it, the interdisciplinary
research process is the key. And for it, insights are drawn that
are influenced by the perspective of different disciplines.
Therefore, it is insights that are integrated for study and not
perspective in the interdisciplinary research
process.
