I believe the statement “that only $40-$50 of the value associated with manufacturing the Kindle goes to U.S. companies is a sign of the decline of American competitiveness” is correct. There have been numerous case studies we have reviewed in this course and others throughout this program that refer to the lack of American capacity to manufacture, design, produce, or distribute a product or service as fast as Asian countries can. The Amazon Kindle is no exception. I believe American companies have individuals that have the imagination and mental capacity to develop ideas and concepts, but Americans do not have the resources and technology necessary to implement these ideas. Apple and IBM are companies that had their conception on American soil but were not able to keep the creation of the product to American because the technology and resources were not available or were not as efficient as they were in Asian companies.
I believe if Amazon had decided to keep the manufacturing exclusively to the U.S. the Kindle would not have been such a success because the technologies they needed, desired, and envisioned for the product would not have been possible, or it would have taken a significant amount of time for the technology to be developed. Amazon would have lost money and resources by using only American designers and manufacturers.
