The last two sentences of the handout describe the Tao (Dao) as the way of untamed nature and as the source of social harmony. What do you think that means, and how does it compare to the Confucian idea of the source of social harmony?
Tao Dao believes that life is happy and should be lived with virtue and balance. Social harmony is achieved through balance found in nature and that everything has two sides which balance and even out. Social harmony is emphasized as extreme situations lead to tyranny and chaos, thus harmony and balance is the key.
Confucian believe social harmony is achieved through following morals, rituals, learning and relationships, that mutual respect and duty benefits all of society, while Taoism relies on a quiet life through meditation.
