List the services provided by Network Layer? Explain each service

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Network layer is the third layer in the osi model of computer networking .
packet forwarding including routing through routers and qualotu of service management are
done by the network layer.
The services provided by the networklayer are :-
1-Connectionless Communication
2-Host addressing
3-Message forwarding
1- Connectionless communication -Networklayer provides the facility of connection less transfer
of data fromone end to another. In connectionless communication one does not have to build a session
with the reciever it can be done at any time and no acknowledgement is requiredin this typeof communication
and this is possible because of the network layer.
2-Host Addressing -Every host in the network must have a unique address which determines where the host is located in the network.
Every address on internet is known as ip address and this ip address is addressed ny the networklayer .
3-Message Forwarding- message forwarding is another service provided by the networklayer . what happens is many networks are patitioned
int sub networks and connect toanother networks on for wide area communications, networklayer uses specialized hosts known as routers
which are used to forward packets between diffrent networks.

network layer also responds to service requests from transport layer and issues service requests to data linklayer.

ROVNO Ltd. just invested $50 000 into a new local network. Services provided by the network will bring $15 000 per year in the next five years. The following information is given: - Real MARR = 10% - Expected annual inflation = 2% - The network will be sold for salvage after five years; its depreciation rate is 20% Is this a good investment in terms of the internal rate of return?

A modified network layer is used at both the sender and the receiver that not only prepends the header as above but also adds a trailer string “END” at the end of the message from the transport layer. What changes will need to be made to your program so that the original application layer message from the sender is still received properly by the application layer at the receiver state just a short answer.
