It is security control which allows you to prevent a some malicious action from actually occurring by blocking or stopping someone or something from doing or harming. Some of the primitive controls are security guards encryption, Mantraps, Authentication, Video surveillance, Firewalls, Locks, Biometric Access Control, Intrusion Prevention Systems.
The main difference between preventive and detective controls is preventive controls use IPS, and detective controls use IDS (Intrusion Detection System).
