DISK PERFORMANCE
For this assignment you will research the performance specifications of commonly used disks as well as the impact of configurations such as RAID etc on those performance characteristics. You will also research the common storage performance needs of server operating systems and applications and see how this compares to the performance characteristics you found for common systems. Be sure to detail how you the information you gathered would impact your decisions on implementing a disk. Highlight in your response how you think these items can be resolved and what needs to be kept in consideration when designing a virtualized system.
RAID- is a redundancy system which is used for storing the data in different storage devices inorder to protect data incase of failure.
TYPES OF DISKS-
IDE-Integrated drive electronics
ATA-Advanced tech attached
SATA-serially adv tech attached
SAS-serially attached storage
FC-Fiber channel
EFD-enterprise flash disk
Common raid technologies are mirroring and striping
RAID0-Data is just written into multiple disks
-Not recommended for data protection
RAID1-Mirroring
-Data is written into two disks
-Min disks 2
-Fault tolerance 1
RAID3-Dedicated parity
even if one disk fails the data will be safe in the parity disk
-min disks-3
-fault tolerance 2
RAID5-Dedicated parity
data is written into the disks using extra parity disk
-fault tolerance 1 disk
RAID6-Dual distributed parity
-min disks required-4
- -fault tolerance -2
RAID 1+0 Mirroring and striping
min disks req-2
fault tolerance 2
