Homework Answers

Answer #1

A freeware is a software that is available to use freely but has copyright whereas open source are softwares that are available to be used for free but can also be edited to make your own copyright. Using freeware you have to build your application from scratch and in open source software you can merge your ideas. A freeware offers software freedom whereas a open source software offers the widespread adoption of the software. Examples of freeware are Adobe Reader, Skype and Evernote. Examples of open source software are PuTTY, FreeBSD and Firefox.

A company might determine to use freeware because freeware softwares are free to use. The softwares can be used for free as long as a person wants untill he decides to pay for it. Therefore for an organisation to use freeware Reduces the cost for renting or using a paid software.

Disadvantages of open source softwares are that they require you to learn the software to use it. For example you need to learn linux commands before using it. To run an open source software you need to have the software as well as hardware specifications for it. You have to rely on third party hardwares because many hardwares does not support open source software.
