Tied columns are used to place the reinforcement tightly in the thin concrete cover, if when there is a high stress the reinforcement cannot burst out from the concrete, it is equally spaced lateral ties across the columns.

Spiral columns are used in cylindrical column with continous helical bars to provide support the column in the transverse direction.

✓ Column with spiral can withstand more loads than the column with lateral ties because spiral column can provide more ductility and toughness in the transverse direction.
