The bridge project in class is a lot like a 3 point bend test. The two supports for the test just happen to be very far apart, let's say 60 cm. If you decide just to take a single strip of balsa wood for your bridge, which for example has cross sectional dimensions of 1 cm on a side and a modulus of 3.4 GPa, how far will the midpoint deflect in mm when the 1 kg mass is placed on the beam? Remember F=ma, and a is gravitational acceleration. Outcome: you’d better do more than just use a single balsa wood strip for your bridge
