By solving the given below problem justify how void ratio of the soil is important in the calculation of other index properties of soil? Problem: A soil sample has a total unit weight of 16.97 kN/m3 and a void ratio of 0.84. The specific gravity of solids is 2.70. Determine the moisture content, dry unit weight and degree of saturation of the sample.

Answer #1

vvoid ratio is the important property because all other properties are dpeneds on void ratio of the soil. Void ratio means volume of void divided by volume of solid. water is lies in the voids and degree of saturation is depends on these voids.

Density of soil is also function of void ratio. As void ratio decreases density of soil increases.
