For a moist soil, given total volume V = 0.22 m3; total weight W 3.124 kN; moisture content w = 15% and specific gravity of soil solids, G = 2.65. Calculate the moist unit weight, dry unit weight ,void ratio, porosity, and degree of saturation.

Answer #1

SUMMARY

MOIST UNIT WEIGHT = total weight / volume = W/V

After finding the moist unit weight, we have relation between dry unit weight and moist unit weight as shown in image

Dry unit weight = moist unit weight / (1+w) where w = water content or moisture content

To find void ratio, we have relation between dry unit weight and void ratio,

Dry unit weight = (G* unit weight of water) /(1+e)

unit weight of water is taken as 9.81Kn/cum

POROSITY n = e/(1+e)

Degree of saturation s = (w*G) /e

We know es=wG
