Soil Mechanics Question (Civil Engineering)

1) A specimen of compacted soil has a mass of 1.906 kg, a volume of 944 cc, water content of 10% and 2.68 specific gravity of solids. Determine the bulk density, dry density, void ratio and degree of saturation.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given data :- M=1.906 kg, V=944 cc, w=10%, G=2.68

A) Bulk density ()

= Given Mass/Given volume = M/V = 1.906/944

= 0.002019 kg/cc = 2.019 gm/cc

B) Dry Density ()

= BD/(1+w) = 2.019/(1+0.1) = 1.8355 gm/cc

C) Void Ratio (e)

; e = void ratio

density of water= 1gm/cc

1.8355 = (1×2.68)/(1+e) => 1+e= 2.68/1.8355

e = 0.46

D) Degree of saturation (S)

=> S×0.46=0.1×2.68 => S = 0.5826

S=58.26%
