Deep foundations are those foundations used in the situation where the upper soil is not able to support the load transfered by the superstructure and due to which the foundations are made deeper into the hard soil. Pile foundation is the main deep foundation used.The pile foundation may be driven,bored,or cast in situ piles and can be made of either steel,wood,concrete,etc.

The main components of pile foundation are

1. Pile cap

2. Pile

Pile Cap- It is the member used to tranfer the load from superstructure to the piles.

Pile- A small diameter shaft which are long and slender members which are used to transfer the load into deeper soil, which can be driven or installed into the soil by suitable means.
